Imagine if your restaurant was vandalized by local graffiti artists in a trendy part of Montreal. That would be disastrous for a business owner. That is exactly what happened to “Le Speakeasy” in Montreal. It is discouraging for business owners to have their place of work vandalized. Nicolas Delrieu, of “Le Speakeasy” invited the graffiti artists back to sprawl street art all over the establishment. The restaurant is now called Vandale which is vandal in English. I really love the Banksy-inspired mural of Anthony Bourdain. Their phoenix slogan when you enter the site, “burn it to the ground” is ballsy for an eating establishment. Then again Vandale caters to a different type of clientele.
According to the patrons of “Vandale”, this summer we had fun getting Le Speakeasy Restaurant vandalized by Montrealers to create @vandalemtl. However, fortunately, the artists did not find our underground landmark in the basement!
Vandale is a colorful concept where you’ll find the Speakeasy team with Chef Alexandre Payon, Bar Chef Jake Cristofare, David Badiane, and Cédric and Nicolas.
On the kitchen side, expect revisited classics composed essentially of Quebec local products. On the bar side, an original cocktail menu awaits you with creations from our chef bartender.
The vandalized theme extends to the plates and cocktails: Chef Alexandre Payon has created a colourful menu featuring Quebec products, while mixologist Jake Cristofaro has created a cocktail menu in honor of the artists who came to “vandalize” the place.
“Each cocktail is named after an artist and best represents their creation: the colors, the intentions, the tone,” explains Delrieu. Terouz, Leylaisonfire and Bezo are on the drinking menu, as are artists Wolf Lab and Opoze. (source)
