Every Halloween, food companies jump on the spooky-season bandwagon, usually by sprinkling pumpkin spice on something that never asked for it. Nissin, however, has gone straight for the jugular with Vampire Noodles, a Hot Garlic Chicken ramen that turns blood-red when you add hot water. Now that’s getting into the Halloween spirit.
The colour comes from natural beet colouring, giving these noodles a look Dracula would appreciate. Kids will probably love the spectacle, and heck, so would I. There’s something wonderfully ridiculous about a meal that looks like it escaped from a vampire’s kitchen.
You know you’re asking for trouble when your mother tells you not to play with your food and you turn dinner into a vampire’s bloodbath. This isn’t just playing with your food. It’s an appetite for destruction, and Mom was right all along.
It’s like Vlad the Impaler inviting you over for dinner and serving blood-red noodles. The Hot Garlic Chicken flavour is a deliciously twisted touch, considering vampires are famously repelled by garlic. Nissin’s promotional pitch suggests even garlic-hating vampires can’t resist these noodles, but I’m not convinced Dracula would be so easily fooled.
Pumpkin spice can keep autumn. Nissin has made Halloween a little more entertaining, one gloriously ghoulish cup at a time. Who needs another cinnamon-scented snack when dinner can look like it came straight from a vampire’s pantry?
Dracula might refuse the meal, but the rest of us can dig in. Just enjoy your noodles, have a laugh, and watch out for your neck.
Nibbles: Early Cup Noodles vending machines dispensed hot water. Nissin says 20,000 were installed across Japan within a year.
