The Cheeto Zone
Halloween has a way of bringing out the weirdest flavors, foods that don’t just challenge your taste buds but leave you wondering what the hell is coming next. “Cheetos has a new flavor.” Sounds innocent enough, until you find out what Cheetos Sweet Phantom Heat Puffs, “The Flavor of Fear,” has in store.
This limited edition Halloween release is a collaboration with horror movie studio Blumhouse, and even the packaging looks like it belongs in a horror movie, with a sleek black bag and red accents. The first bite, however, is almost comforting, tasting something like Cinnamon Toast Crunch or a churro, with a sweet cinnamon flavor. Then a sharp, black-pepper-like spice sneaks up on you and changes everything.
The sweetness gives way to heat, followed by tingling, a strange numbing sensation associated with Sichuan pepper and, just when you think it is over, a subtle fizz. Cheetos has taken a little food science, mixed it with Halloween and created a snack that keeps changing as you eat it.
Are you adventurous enough to explore a completely new taste? Take a bite and you enter a strange and delicious dimension where cinnamon gives way to pepper, sweetness meets heat and one innocent Cheeto becomes an unexpected adventure. At first, everything seems normal. Then your tongue tingles, your mouth goes slightly numb and the fizz arrives. You have crossed into another dimension, a dimension of taste and heat where you may start wondering whether you are eating the Cheeto or the Cheeto is eating you. There is only one way forward. Reach into the bag and take another bite. Welcome to The Cheeto Zone.
You’re going to want to hoard these for yourself, but there’s one problem. You won’t be able to hide the evidence. That bright orange residue will give you away, leaving traces on your fingers and around your mouth. You’ll be caught, so you might as well lick your fingers clean and destroy the evidence.
The real danger is stopping at one. Curiosity will send you back into the bag for another taste, and before you know it, Halloween has turned a simple snack into a full-blown sensory adventure. Things are going to get hot this Halloween, and if you see someone walking around with orange fingers and a suspicious grin, you already know what happened.
Nibbles
Did you know Cheetos has a name for that orange powder left all over your fingers? It’s called “Cheetle.” So the next time you finish a bag and your fingers look like they’ve been dipped in orange dust, don’t worry, you’re not making a mess. You’re wearing Cheetle like a badge of honor.
