McRib’s love-hate relationship with fans is truly one for the history books. For those who can’t get enough of the infamous sandwich, there’s exciting news on the horizon. According to Food & Wine, McDonald’s is going the extra mile this year by offering half-gallon jugs of McRib sauce in conjunction with the return of their annual limited-time McRib sandwich.
The sauce will go on sale at 10 AM on November 25th. The jug of McRib sauce, cleverly named “A Whole Lotta McRib Sauce,” is described in McDonald’s press release as “perfect for holiday parties, festive recipes, or the ultimate stocking stuffer for McRib fans.” Though, I can’t help but wonder just how large a stocking would need to be to fit such a sizable jug.
McDonald’s chief marketing and customer experience officer Tariq Hassan says: “The McRib is more than a sandwich – it’s a part of culture, it’s a legend, it’s an event. We wanted to embrace that spirit and give fans an even bigger way to celebrate this year with A Whole Lotta McRib Sauce.”
The McRib remains one of the most elusive and polarizing items on McDonald’s menu. It doesn’t show up often, but when it does, loyal fans flock to it with fervor. The sandwich’s origin traces back to 1972 when Professor Roger Mandingo at the University of Nebraska received funding from the National Pork Producers Council to develop a method for creating restructured meats. His breakthrough technology allowed small pieces of meat to be bound together in various shapes using salt and mechanical force—paving the way for innovations like dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets and, of course, the iconic McRib sandwich.
