How did Goldfish crackers come to be?
Goldfish have always been part of my kids’ world. Pepperidge Farm, the makers of Goldish claim that they make over 3,000 Goldfish crackers every second. Goldfish snacks were introduced to the United States in 1962 by Pepperidge Farm founder Margaret Rudkin. Originally invented by Oscar J. Kambly at Swiss biscuit manufacturer Kambly in 1958 to celebrate his wife who was a Pisces.
In 1997, Goldfish made its first-ever change to its iconic cracker in the history of its existence. They gave the fish a face. Now we’re used to goldfish crackers staring and smiling back at us (before we down them by the handful, of course).
Julia Child liked Goldfish crackers so much, that on Thanksgiving, she often put out a bowl, alongside her famous reverse martini.
